Electronics & Software Engineering

• 2013 To update my knowledge of current microcomputer technology, I wrote a blog (udoogurus.tumblr.com) that explored a new microcomputer board – the UDOO. The board is based on the ARM family of CPUs. I had a brief involvement with development of the first generation ARM CPU in the early 80s.
• The blog provides links to a cache of all relevant manufacturers' data sheets, circuit schematics, PCB overlays and a bill of material. The circuit description covers the i.MX 6Dual/6Quad processors with its complex suite of power supply chips, which dominate the board, reflecting the current approach to microprocessor circuit design. As the Udoo project gained traction, its website began to cover the interface devices, so I decided not to take the blog further.
• 1981 Developed the Acorn Disk Filing System, Econet and Text Editor for the BBC Microcomputer. These were produced to meet the first state tenders for educational computing. Later wrote and published Networking with the BBC Microcomputer with Prentice Hall UK.
• 1979 Developed networks of TRS-80s for schools – probably the first in Australia.
• 1978 Reverse engineered the interface of three different model Sanyo Cash Registers and made a single board that converted them into point of sale terminals. I switched from RS-232 to RS-422 and hooked them up to a TRS-80. The technology was sold to an NCR subsidiary.
• 1976 Designed a 16-channel hub (RS-232) to link SC/MPs and later Signetics 2650 micros (much like an Ethernet hub, though with must simpler packet construction), while in second year of college. I also connected it to an Altair 8800 and interfaced an Olivetti paper tape punch and a manual pull-through paper tape reader.
